Meekatharra is a town located in the Mid West region of Western Australia. Situated on the Great Northern Highway, it is around 765 kilometers north-northeast of the state capital Perth. The town has a fascinating history that dates back to the early days of European settlement in the region. The area in and around Meekatharra has been inhabited by Indigenous Australians for over 40,000 years. A number of different Aboriginal groups, including the Yamatji, have lived in the region for thousands of generations. They have left behind a rich cultural heritage, evidenced by the numerous rock art sites that can be found in the area. The first Europeans to explore the region were the party of Francis Gregory, who passed through the area on their way to the Gascoyne River in 1858. The region remained relatively untouched by European settlement for several decades, and it wasn't until the discovery of gold in 1895 that the town of Meekatharra began to grow. The first gold rush in the region began in 1897, and it was quickly followed by a second and larger rush in 1904. The discovery of gold brought many prospectors and miners to the area, and several towns and mining camps were established in the region, including Meekatharra. During the early years of the gold rush, Meekatharra was a bustling town with a thriving economy. It was also a very rough and lawless place, with rampant crime and violence. One of the most notorious incidents occurred in 1906, when the town's bank was robbed by a gang of bushrangers led by a man named Arthur Upfield. The gang made off with over £7,000 in cash and gold, but they were eventually caught and imprisoned. Despite the challenges, Meekatharra continued to grow and prosper in the years that followed. The town became an important hub for the region's mining industry, and numerous other industries also flourished in the area, including agriculture and pastoralism. Today, Meekatharra is a small town with a population of around 750 people. It remains an important center for the region's mining industry, as well as a popular destination for tourists interested in exploring the area's history and natural beauty. In addition to its gold rush heritage, Meekatharra is also home to a number of historic buildings and sites, including the old courthouse and police station, which date back to the early 1900s, as well as a number of old mine sites and machinery. The town is also surrounded by some of Western Australia's most stunning natural scenery, including the nearby Meekatharra Range and Mount Gould. Visitors to the area can explore the region's rugged beauty on foot, by four-wheel drive, or horseback. Meekatharra is a small town with a rich and fascinating history. From its early years as a rough-and-tumble gold rush town to its present-day status as an important hub for the region's mining industry, Meekatharra has played a key role in shaping the course of Western Australia's history. Today, the town remains an important center for industry and tourism, and a testament to the courage and resilience of those who have called this region home throughout the centuries.
